History of South Tampa Sticks
and Plant High School Lacrosse:
2001 - South Tampa Sticks
Youth Lacrosse League, Inc. ("STS") founded and began with single boy's middle school team (played 1 game against
a team from South Florida). Clearwater and Wesley Chapel began programs.
2002 - STS plays first "season"
against local start-up programs, STS 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
2003 - Added STS JV, comprised mostly
of Plant student players.
2004 - Added a Youth program to build feeder program; STS JV became Plant HS
Varsity; established annual STS/Plant Fall Clinics to introduce new players to the game
2005 - Added STS girls varsity, established a Plant JV
2006 - Plant Varsity
boys win first West Florida Lacrosse League Championship and go on to win the first ever Club State Championship held at Disney
Sports Complex against Dwyer School.
2007 - Plant
Boys again win WFLL Championship and runner up to Douglas School in State Finals at Disney, Florida Gulf Coast chapter of
US Lacrosse is established and recognized nationally.
2008
- FHSAA recognizes lacrosse as a sanctioned varsity sport in the State of Florida. STS adds a middle school girls
program. Plant adds a 2nd varsity team in the "B" division of WFLL.
2008 - STS/Plant signs agreement with School Board for the use of Anderson Elementary Athletic
Fields and secures a permanent home.
2008 - Plant
Varsity Boys win 3rd WFLL Championship undefeated within region. Again, runner up in State Finals (in overtime
loss) to Palm Beach Gardens (20-0 in undefeated season).
2008
- Plant Varsity B and Girls HS make WFLL playoffs, but lose in first round.
2009 - Plant fields a second JV team - 105 HS players in 4 boys programs.
2009 - Plant Varsity Boys close game to Barron Collier in FHSIA
semi-finals held at Barron Collier. Plant Varsity goes on to win 4th consecutive WFLL championship against
WCAA. 3 Plant players named as US Lacrosse All-Americans (German, Casselli, Tate) - first ever for Gulf Coast US Lax.
2009 - Plant Varsity B makes playoffs in Division B, but loses in first round.
Girls Varsity loses close championship game against reigning champs - Freedom HS.
2010 - STS creates a Varsity and JV (Plant, Robinson, Tampa Prep, Jefferson) to compete in newly formed
SSLL. Plant Varsity participates in the "in-school" only WFLL league.
